Rueda classes
Rueda warm-up The idea with this class is to have an easy start for the weekend, using mainly rueda commands that you should know on this level. Also it shouold give you an idea about the level requirement for the C and the D level.
New moves In these classes new rueda moves selected by the instructor will be taught. On level B you should expect the majority of the new moves to be standard rueda moves.
Standard moves In the beginning of the weekend we will try to build a basis of common rueda commands, so that it will be easier to dance in the same rueda.
The specific moves that will be taught in these classes will be posted in advance. Many of the moves in the Norwegian Rueda Standard can be viewed on video at ruedastandard.no, so you can determine wheather you know them or not.
Speed & impro This is a master level class, to challenge the most experienced rueda dancers at the festival with fast music and improvisation. This is not the class where you ask the instructor to repeat something once more.
Festival de rueda Practicing rueda moves that have been taught on this level. A bit repetition of the moves that has been taught on this level this weekens, and mainly dancing rueda. This is not a class for learning new rueda moves. The name comes from a rueda call "festival de .." that can be used together with a number of other commands, like fetival de pelota. Then you do pelota several times with clapping in between. Sort of what we do in this class in general..
Street rueda Fun stuff, not complicated casino moves, but cuban rueda moves for street dancers (who do not go to dance schools). Typically enchufla con this, enchufla con that, and maybe a yogúr with some extra flavor.
Hand signs Using only rueda moves that have hand signs. It is often impossible to dance rueda de casino late at a party, because it is hard / impossible to hear the calling when the DJ tends to turn up the volume. Using hand signs in addition to the call makes it possible to dance rueda regardless of the music volume. This class is offered for the first time at the Rueda Congress in 2010!
Rueda styling Focus on how the basic moves are danced in a rueda so that it looks good, not focus on learning new moves.
Rueda contratiempo Dancing rueda in contratiempo / on 2 / in the timing used in Son. Participants should know the basics of Son, so if you are planning on taking this class and don't have experience with Son, you should participate in the Son 1 class earlier in the weekend. If you have never danced Rueda in contratiempo before, then Rueda contratiempo 1 is the right class for you. If you are experienced in Rueda contratiempo and your rueda level is D or higher, then Rueda contratiempo 2 is an option.
Rueda cruzado This is a form of rueda where there are two different groups in the same circle, every second couple being in one group, and changing partner only within your group. The two groups dance in counter-rythm, one of them starting on beat number 1, and the other one beat number 5. Fun, but challenging. If you have never danced Rueda cruzado, then Rueda cruzado 1 is the right class for you. If you are experienced in Rueda cruzado and your rueda level is D or higher, then Rueda cruzado 2 is an option. You can get an idea of the part with dancing on different beats from SalsaNor's YouTube video:
Rueda con dos mujeres (Rueda with two women) In stead of dancing rueda as couples in a circle, we will dance rueda with every man leading two women, one in each hand. Everything becomes different and a bit more complicated. But fun! A good thing is that it is probably even more challenging for the women than it is for the men. If you have never danced Rueda con dos mujeres, and your rueda level is C or higher, then Rueda dos mujeres 1 is the right class for you. If you are experienced in Rueda con dos mujeres and your rueda level is D or higher, then Rueda dos mujeres 2 is an option.
Rueda con dos ruedas (Rueda in two circles) Sometimes when a rueda is very big, it is common to split it up in two ruedas / circles, one inside the other. That might be done in a regular class or at a party without any further arrangements.
This idea gets more challenging if the inner circle turns outward, and dance rueda por fuera, meaning that they will be changing partner on the outside of the circle, facing the outer circle / rueda. This is not a form of rueda you should expect to see danced socially, but it is a fun variation, and maybe an idea that can be used in a performance. This class is open to experienced rueda dancers, level D or higher, because you need to be able to dance por fuera, or pick it up rapidly in the class.
Couples dance
Salsa:
Alle the salsa classes at the Rueda Congress are casino style, which means cuban style. There are 3 different levels:
Salsa beginners classes: you don't need any salsa experience at all. The lightest grey and the blue classes will be your options throughout the weekend.
Salsa intermediate classes: you need at least half a year of salsa experience, and be able to follow lessons on intermediate level at your dance school. Leading and following should be no problem for you.
Salsa advanced classes: you should have a couple of years salsa experience, and be able to follow lessons on advanced level at your dance school. You should be able to learn new moves rather quick, without needing several repetitions.
Salsa moves Learning new salsa moves on the specified level.
Salsa styling Focus on the the style while dancing salsa in couples.
Salsa with rumba Using rumba moves in salsa dancing. This class might be difficult if you have never been to a rumba class. Maybe you should try to join at least one rumba class this weekend?
Son One of the ancestors of Salsa. Son is a coulpes dance, in contratiempo, meaning that you pause on 1 (/5) and start on 2(/6) - with emphasis on 4(/8). Video example of traditional Son:
Cha cha cha Another of the ancestors of Salsa. Cha cha cha is a coulpes dance, one the cuban bailes populares (popular dances), which was common in Cuba in the 50s. It is a contratiempo dance like Son, and to some Cha cha cha music, one cuban might choose to dance Cha cha cha while another one might dance Son.
Mambo
Yet another of the ancestors of Salsa. Mambo is also one the cuban bailes populares (popular dances), common in Cuba in the 40s and 50s. This is also a coulpes dance, even thoug the partners also do certain steps separately.
Individual dance
Reggaeton The most popular dance for the young crowd in Cuba today.
Lady salsa styling Focus on making your salsa dancing look good. For women.
Cuban body moves Focus on dancing with your body, the cuban way, not only feet and hands.
Rumba The traditional cuban dance, also very useful to improve the quality of your moves in salsa and rueda.
Afrocuban A taste of the AfroCuban dance inheritage, with the different moves of the different Orishas.
Animación a lo cubano Animation is basically what often is done in warm-up for dance classes, you follow the moves of the instructor, forming several lines if necessary. A fun way to start the party! This party warm-up is with a cuban instructor.
Menito This is a line dance, with certain patterns / moves that are called out, similar to rueda de casino. Here are a few examples of meneito (variable quality :) con "salsenio" | en Tropical
